This design presented challenges that are becoming increasingly common in the manufacturing industry. Clearances and tolerances are close, the customer
required access to three sides of the part to machine it completely in one operation, and required multi-station, pallet-mounted fixturing for high-volume
automotive production.
These initial requirements made this project challenging in almost every aspect of fixture design. The part itself is a complex, thin-walled, easily distorted bracket which is difficult to hold. This,
combined with the need for three-sided machining required careful attention to clamping techniques.
Additionally, the machining operations required close attention to tool and spindle clearances. We used cross columns instead of standard tombstones to allow for these requirements.
