Jaws 4-Point Locating This set of jaws addresses the need to center four cast bosses relative to the bore and face machined in this operation.

The casting has a draft on the locating bosses as well as a high degree of inconsistency to the boss location.

We used a standard Kitagawa four-jaw chuck as our base. This style chuck acts like two independent, two-jaw chucks. Top jaws were manufactured to locate on the bosses precisely, taking the draft angle into consideration.

Clamping is made consistent with even distribution of clamping forces: a single jaw is used as a primary locator while the remaining three jaws have compensation designed into them.

The part configuration required four end-locators, instead of three, as usually preferred.
